HEFNA CELEBRATES GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS WITH UNDERGROUND RELEASES ON ELYSIUM VIDEO
DISTRIBUTION It
was 1997 when Black Hefna first got the notion to celebrate the beauty of the
urban woman of color. He was working for a distribution company, and they didn't
see the vision when one of their clients came to the table with a selection of
videos they deemed "unmarketable." "Well,"
thought Hefna, "Luke is doing his "Freak Fest" thing and "Girls Gone Wild' has
got the white boys covered.but no one is covering the full landscape of the world
of urban girls. I can do that." And
he did. Hefna took his Super 8 camera and his distribution contacts and sold over
17,000 units of his first video feature, "Buckwild Beach Week." Today, 4 years,
3 digital cameras and some 20 + titles later, Black Hefna and his Elysium Video
Distribution are perhaps the number one marketers of underground urban product.
With new titles like "Buckwild in Brazil," "Strip
Hop," "Stallionz," and "The Return of Bootylicious", and ghetto classics like
"Ass Illustrated", "Buckwild Beach Week," and "Beauties of the Week," Hefna believes
his video empire is positioned for at least a half millions in sales in 2003.
With imitation
being the highest form of flattery, one can search the web and track an overabundance
of underground "Beach Week" titles. But Black Hefna is neither impressed nor concerned.
"What positions my company, Elysium Video Distribution from the rest is the quality
I bring to the table. First of all, all of the women are beautiful, period, no
busters. Second, our videos give you a full scope of the environment, location
and culture of where they are shot. A lot of the imitators shoot just the girls,
close frame. But when you watch, "Buckwild at Beach Week" for instance.our footage
lets you know you are on the beach. Or check out "Buckwild in Brazil."That
title has the music, the flavor and the ambiance of the lovely city of Brazil.
" "And this brings
us to the third reason we can't be touched.we are now traveling the world. The
markets of Miami and Houston are over saturated. Everybody has a camera now. But
how many have been to Brazil? How many are going to Columbia or Dominica Republic
like we plan to?" Elysium
Video has definitely been bringing the noise. So much so, in fact, that the powers
behind "Girls Gone Wild" approached Black Hefna just last year. "They wanted to
buy my footage. I told them no. The funny thing is, we got into a debate. Where
as we celebrate the booty in our footage, they like to focus on breasts. I didn't
really get a feel that they understood the urban marketplace," cites Hefna. Elysium
is also the home to several 'unda'-underground titles, including "Drama at the
Hip Hop Awards," which includes footage of the infamous fight at the Source Awards,
and "Puffy in Paradise '98" with raw footage from a concert in Hawaii. "Ass Illustrated,
Vol. 1" is another 'unda'- underground classic. Shot in black and white, Hefna
wore spy glasses in the strip club to secure footage that is way under the radar!
