HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION,
LAMON BREWSTER
A QUIET STORM BREWING
CHAMPION
TO DEFEND TITLE SEPTEMBER 4 ON SHOWTIME
Growing up in
the late 1970’s, Lamon Brewster had the same aspirations
as many young boys: to be a Kung Fu fighter. Brewster would
feign sleep and then stay up and watch Kung Fu Theater all
night. After destroying a brand new drum set in a Bruce
Lee imitation, his mother decided to find an appropriate
outlet for Brewster’s excess energy. At the age of
seven, Brewster began boxing at the Riverside Gym in his
hometown of Indianapolis, IN.
Fast forward
to today, “Relentless” Lamon Brewster is the
World Boxing Organization (WBO) Heavyweight Champion, having
defeated Wladimir Klitschko this past April, in what the
sports world has deemed the “upset of the year.”
At the age of 31, with 27 KOs out of 30 wins, Brewster is
an avid contender on a mission.
On Saturday,
September 4, Brewster will fight the first defense of his
heavyweight crown when he battles Pan Pacific heavyweight
titleholder Kali “Checkmate” Meehan on Showtime
Championship Boxing. The Don King Productions promoted event
will be televised live from the Mandalay Bay Resort &
Casino in Las Vegas at 7:00 ET/ 10:00 PT. The world will
be watching!
Brewster still
has a lot to prove despite being a claimant to the world
heavyweight title. A personable fighter with an attack-minded
style, the Los Angeleno balances his newfound celebrity
with a sense of cool confidence and responsibility. Hoping
to position himself as an ambassador of the sport, Brewster
is serious about putting a positive spin on the craft. Working
alongside his manager, Sam Simon, co-creator of “The
Simpsons,” Brewster has a vision that extends far
beyond the ring.
“Boxing
provided me direction and focus as a child. It is that same
discipline, direction and guidance that is lacking in so
many of our youth today. I want to help bring the glory
back to this sport, while influencing a generation,”
cites Brewster.
Brewster defeated
Wladimir Klitschko with a stunning fifth-round TKO at Mandalay
Bay in Las Vegas April 10, 2004, to claim the WBO title.
He won the NABO championship by scoring a third-round TKO
over former Olympic bronze medalist Nate Jones on Feb. 2,
2002. In his defense of that title, the Indianapolis native
stopped Tom Martin and added the WBC Continental Americas
heavyweight belt to his resume in a United States Boxing
Association (USBA) title eliminator. After turning pro at
age 23, Brewster defeated his initial 22 opponents. Following
a 2-2 record in 2000, the hard-hitting heavyweight has knocked
out his past six opponents. September 4 will mark Brewster’s
10th Las Vegas appearance and second consecutive Mandalay
Bay start.
