ROD GRIER’S
IMAGES DEMOLISHED IN KILL BILL
(BUT RESTORED AT ARTIST’S SITE!)
In the electric-paced opening sequence of Quentin Tarantino’s
biggest hit, Kill Bill, Vivica Fox’s character defiantly
defends her home, as she and Uma Thurman go to blows. The
house is literally slashed to pieces as she fights for her
life. Paintings fall from the wall, designer plates crash
to the floor and furniture is destroyed!
Among
the casualties in that opening scene are the original paintings
and designs of Colorado based artist Rod Grier. But art
lovers and movie memorabilia collectors despair not! The
artwork, seen in its original form, is on display and available
for purchase at RodGrierImages.com.
Grier, brother of Pam Grier,
(acclaimed actress and star of Tarantino’s Jackie
Brown) has a total of thirteen paintings on display in the
film. Five are his original paintings, while eight others
are the military commemorative plates (seen crashing to
the floor in the film) designed specifically for the movie.
Grier’s original works in the film include “Cowboy
Poetry,” “Cowboy Poker,” “City On
Fire,” “Indian (NFS),” and “Hollywood
Backlot.”
Tarantino asked Grier to design
the eight commemorative plates showcasing African Americans
in the military, after meeting Grier through his sister,
Pam, at the premiere party for Jackie Brown. Grier, hoping
to attract the director’s attention, attended the
party armed with five of his original paintings in a brown
plastic trash bag!
He distributed the matted
prints to Tarantino and members of the cast, including Samuel
L. Jackson and Bridget Fonda, as Christmas presents from
him and Pam. Tarantino’s mother called a month later,
and congratulated him on his work, later purchasing art
from him for her home. Four years went by, when in March
of last year, Sandy Wasco, the art director for Kill Bill,
called Grier, stating Tarantino had tapped him for the artwork
for his new film.
“To
have your work displayed in a movie is any artist’s
dream come true,” reveals Grier. “But to be
a part of a Tarantino film is a double blessing! Kill Bill
Vol. I and Vol. II are phenomenal contributions to the art
of filmmaking. I’m thrilled to be a part of it all!”
A revenge
thriller, Kill Bill stars Uma Thurman, Vivica A. Fox, Darryl
Hannah, Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, and David Carradine. To
