Mr. Jerry Heller, Comes Out of HIATUS to Guide the movement
Like a rose emerging from the cracks in concrete,
Hit
A Lick Records, a Latino owned and operated venture, sits
in the heart of Los Angeles’ controversy-driven Rampart district, a
flagship signaling the sign of great things to come.
Cites the company’s president and CEO, Pablito Vasquez, “Hit A Lick Records is destined
to become the most powerful, successful, multi-media Latino owned company
in the world.” Housing a roster of up and coming underground Latino rappers, including
Latino rap veteran Frost, Vasquez is definitely on to something. The
very fact that he and his partner, rap industry veteran, Tony G., the company’s president
of production and music, were able to lure the legendary Jerry Heller
out of hiatus to become the company’s COO is no small feat. Tony G., one of the original mix masters at
L.A.’s first all rap station, KDAY Radio, was one of the first DJ’s
to introduce East Coast hip hop to the West Coast. He has worked with Heller in the past, and was instrumental in breaking
acts at Ruthless Records back in the day. Heller can be counted as one of the select few
in the music industry who has had a significant role in shaping trends
and musical movements for four decades.
Arguably, one of the most successful record company executives
of the entire Rap Era, Heller was the moving force and marketing genius
behind the emergence and crossover of rap music to the record buying
public. As co-founder of Ruthless Records, with the late -more- Eazy E, he not only discovered, but also managed trend setting rap artists,
NWA,
forming the foundation for some of the rap world’s most incredible successes.
To date, the original members of NWA have written and produced songs
that have sold in excess of 100 million records, with Ruthless Records
at one time grossing $10,000,000 per month. “Latin hip hop offers an incredible landscape
of untapped musical talent,” remarks Heller. “I am tremendously excited
to be offered the opportunity to be at the forefront of this important
musical movement.” Housed in the old IRS building on the corner
of Pico and Alvarado in Los Angeles, Hit A Lick Records boasts a state
of the art facility, encompassing over 100,000 square feet of property. The outwardly unassuming grounds accommodate
not only two fully loaded digital recording studios, but also a private
screening room, a night club and cutting edge Internet technologies.
The label’s roster includes seven signed acts.
They are E-Side Ghetto, and Lil Blacky, both with newly released
CD’s, Frost, G Fellas, Foesum, Lil One and R&B Latina artist, Vanessa.
In addition, the labels hosts and maintains two web sites, the
popular www.westsidetv.com, with KKBT-FM
radio personality Julio G, and www.hitalick.com. Westsidetv.com was the first interactive hip
hop site on the internet and is a favored vehicle for West Coast rap
music. The label’s
board of directors includes Greg Stricklin, president of technology
and Hector Consuegra, webmaster. “The Latin
community has suffered long enough from a “brown out,” offers Tony G. “Hit A Lick Records is going to transform the
‘brown out’ into a ‘ big brown wave!’”
