CLEO MANAGO TO DEBATE DR. LLAILA AFRICA:

“Where Did Homosexuality Originate Among Black People?”

In contemporary Black life, myths, fears, judgements, assumptions and concerns about homosexuality and bisexuality are a reality among people of African descent.  The often unspoken history of the sexual and psychological mistreatment of Black males and females during slavery is not usually discussed openly, as a strong Euro-Christianity influence pervades the culture.   In short, frank dialogue about homosexuality within the African Diaspora has been rare.

Until now.  On June 27, 1998 at 12:00 p.m. at the Vision Theater, a timely and groundbreaking debate on the issue will occur.  Social architect, Cleo Manago, founder/organizer of the Black Men’s Xchange, and CEO of the AMASSI Center in Inglewood, will confront Dr. Llaila Africa, a health scholar and the author of “African Holistic Health.”   Dr. Africa believes homosexuality in the Black community is problematic, while Manago advocates that the Black community acknowledge  and affirms its sexual diversity.

A panel discussion will follow the debate, featuring Minister Tony Muhammad, Pastor Colin Akridge and others.  The Mooney Twins will moderate, as Malik’s Bookstore hosts the occasion.  Manago and Africa are both influential and powerful speakers.  The event should prove provocative and informative.

The Vision Theater is located at 3341 W. 43rd Place in Leimert Park.  Tickets are $15.00.  Further information call (213) 294-1311.
